Going Through July: Heat, FIFA World Cup, CITY Returns

Carrying on through this month, I continued to follow the FIFA World Cup, which concluded with Sapin's 1-0 win over Argentina in today's Final. On 6 July, Julie and I went to 2nd Shift Brewing to see USA play Belgium play in the Round of 16. It was quite a letdown, as Belgium won 4-1 to advance to the Quarterfinals and the USA was out. Oh, well.

It has been very hot of late, with temperatures topping 90 degrees F (32.2 degrees C) and heat indices topping 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C). It made for quite a challenge at work, but my boss made sure I hydrated and took frequent breaks.

I made progress on two models on my workbench. This week, I plan to apply decals to the 1:200 Artemis I rocket I look to enter at next month's IPMS/USA National Convention. I also made progress on the 1:350 USS San Francisco model I should have completed in a month from now.

Last Thursday (16 July), St. Louis CITY SC and the rest of Major League Soccer were back. CITY hosted cross-state rivals Sporting Kansas City at Energizer Park. Julie was not able to go, so I sold my extra ticket the day before and came to the stadium straight from work. CITY went out to a 2-0 lead int he first half, before Sporting got one back late in that half and leveled it in the second half. CITY won it off a penalty kick in the 85th minute. A good start to the second half of the season.

Yesterday afternoon (18 July), Julie, her roommate Joan, and I went to B&B Creve Coeur West Olive 10 to watch the new movie directed by Christopehr Nolan, The Odyssey. It was an epic telling of Homer's epic poem, filmed in IMAX. We really enjoyed this film, which was nearly three hours long but did not feel like that. The Odyssey is highly recommended. After the movie, I spent time with Julie and Joan--and their dog, Molly--at their apartment before returning home that night.

This morning, I was a greeter at Eliot Unitarian Universalist Chapel. We had a very nice turnout for the service. After the post-service coffee hour, I headed to St. Louis Union Station to see Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014, a restored huge steam locomotive on a cross-country tour. There was quite a crowd there to see the locomotive, but it was great to see this machine built in 1941 still running.

Recently: FIFA World Cup, New Airbrush, a Family Reunion, and 4 July

I have been following the FIFA World Cup as its progresses from the Group Stage to the Knockout Phase. There's been a few surprises and some great and not so great moments so far. When away from a TV screen, I follow it on the FotMob app on my phone.

Just over a week ago (27 June), Julie picked me up and we went to Mount Vernon, Illinois to attend her father's family reunion. After checking into a hotel, we went to another hotel in town where the relatives had a reception. It was very nice meeting Julie's relatives and reading up on her family history.

The next morning (28 June), Julie and I had breakfast and checked out of the hotel in Mount Vernon. We then traveled to St. Charles Boromeo Catholic Church in DuBois, where Julie's ancestors attended services. It is a quite a beautiful church and one of its members told our group about the place.

Our group then traveled about one mile (0.6 km) east to the cemetery where some of the Rekosh ancestors are buried. After that visit, we traveled to Immaculate Conception Church in Tamaroa for Mass. After that, our group went to Immaculate Conception Cemetery to visit the graves of other ancestors.

Our reunion concluded in Du Quoin, with lunch at Tomahawk Bar & Grill. We had a nice lunch before saying our goodbyes. Julie then took me to where her mother grew up in down and to a pair of cemeteries where her family are buried. After the cemetery visits, Julie drove us home. Quite a wonderful weekend.

Last Monday (29 June), a package from Amazon was at my front door. It was three items I ordered the week before during Prime Days. Specifically, it was Gaahleri GHAD-39 airbrush, a 6-foot (1.8m) braided airbrush hose, and a Timbertech ABPST08 airbrush compressor from Airgoo. The airbrush had two needles (0.35mm and 0.5mm) for options in fine or large area painting. The compressor was a low noise unit with an air tank that can be filled up for constant air pressure. I trialed these items this weekend and they will be most useful for my scale modeling.

This past Wednesday (1 July) was busy even if it was my off day from work. A technician from Overhead Door came over to service the garage door, resetting the remote due to a recent power surge and lubricating the door springs. That afternoon, a plumber contacted via Taskrabbit repaired the master bedroom's toilet, replacing a leaking pump that caused water to keep running even after the toilet stopped flushing. It only took about 10 minutes for the job to get done.

That night, Julie and I went to 2nd Shift Brewing on the Hill for a watch party. We saw USA play Bosnia & Herzegovina in a FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match. Julie and I had dinner--I had the savory ducks and chips from Mess Hall, with 2nd Shift's Simon beer--and watched as USA won 2-0 to advance to the Round of 16 against Belgium tomorrow.

Back at work the next day (2 July), I and my branch mates dealt with high heat and humidity that day and Friday. Temperatures reached up to 95 degrees F (35 degrees C) and heat indices (temperature plus humidity) got up to 110 degrees F (43.3 degrees C). I took plenty of breaks in the air-conditioned office as possible and drank plenty of Gatorade. On the way to work, I refilled a 32-ounce (946.4 ml) jug at Quik Trip with the thirst quencher, and it definitely helped.

I stayed home yesterday (4 July) for Independence Day, the USA's 250th Birthday. It was too hot much of the day to go outside, and it got stormy late in the afternoon. Fortunately, no damage here and the power stayed on.

FIFA World Cup Begins and Circus Flora Continues

Last Thursday (11 June), the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA began. Naturally, I am following the action. Friday after work, I picked up Julie and we went to 2nd Shift Brewing Co. in the Hill neighborhood of St. Louis for a watch party.  A group of fans gathered to watch USA play Paraguay in Los Angeles. Julie and I have gone to 2nd Shift several times to join the St. Louligans in watching St. Louis CITY SC away games.

We ordered dinner and beverages before settling in the watch the game. There was quite a nice crowd this night. We were so happy as the USA jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime. It ended up 4-1 for the USA in their opening group stage match. This was the performance many of their supporters--including Julie and I--were hoping for to start the World Cup. I drove Julie home and we were most happy.

I spent Saturday mostly at home, watching World Cup games on TV and taking care of personal matters. The latter included shopping for groceries.

Yesterday, I attended service with Julie at Eliot UU Chapel. Going home after the post-service coffee time, I relaxed at home before going to Circus Flora to volunteer at the Sunday late afternoon performance. I was working as a ticket scanner, which I also did when I helped at the performance the previous Wednesday night. Using a hand-held scanning device, I would scan the attendees' tickets--either bar codes for printed tickets or QR codes on their mobile phones or email printouts. I stayed about 30 minutes after the show began to accommodate late coming audience members. Then, I went into the Big Top to watch the show. The Wednesday show was near capacity and yesterdays was at capacity. Everyone there enjoyed Flying High, Circus Flora's 2026 show. This runs until this Sunday (21 June). Catch it if you can!

IPMS Gateway Regional 2025

Early yesterday morning (13 September), I drove to Affton Elks Lodge #2635, where IPMS Gateway Chapter was holding its 19th annual Gateway to the West Invitational. This year's event also served as the 2025 IPMS/USA Region 14 Contest.

Reaching the Elks lodge just before 7:00 a.m., I helped with completing the show's set up. The tables were put in place the day before, so it was a matter of helping vendors find their assigned tables and getting our admission, registration, contest, and raffle tables ready. Donuts and coffee were available for volunteers and vendors.

I manned the admission table, near the entrance, where attendees would pay for admission and for contest registration. Each attendees received a wristband (white for volunteers, green for vendors, red for attendees). Randy Kleeschulte joined me at admission to help with collecting money and making change, as well as asking attendees how they found out about the show and where they came from. The survey questions help with promotion efforts.

There was quite a crowd waiting to get in when the show officially opened at 9:00 a.m. Randy and I processed the attendees as efficiently as possible. There were long lines at the contest registration tables, as we had many contest entries.

Once things calmed down, I was able to register my six contest models. These included one I finished the night before, a 1:72 scale He 162A from a Frog kit issued in 1972. This made it eligible for the show's Special Category "The Golden Age: 1975." In celebration of IPMS Gateway's 50th anniversary this year, the category was open to any kit that was available in 1975.

I also entered three models in Military (Bren Gun Carrier, BMW R75 with Sidecar, and 6-Pounder Anti-Tank Gun) and two in Ships (Hatsuharu and HMS Repulse). The three Military entries were also eligible for the Special Category.

Everyone was having a great time, the vendors and raffle were doing good business, and I enjoyed seeing people I have not seen in person for months. At 11:00 a.m., the call was made for contest judges. I was among those who volunteered, and we each got a meal voucher from the Elks Lodge. I had a bowl of chili and a soda for lunch before judging started at noon.

I was put on a team to judge figures and basic kit build (also called out of the box). The three judges--Dave Roeder, Julian Durham, and I--efficiently judged the entries and recorded the top three models in each category we judged. We also made picks for the best in the respective classes.

Julie stopped by as judging was wrapping up. (She was at an event at Eliott Unitarian Universalist Chapel earlier that day.) We chatted briefly, then she left for home.

Judging was done by around 2:30 p.m. and the category awards were placed by the respective entries. I didn't win anything, but that's fine. The competition was strong in the categories I entered.

The Raffle Grand Prizes were drawn and presented, then the major awards were handed out. After Mark Twain Hobby Club presented a special award in memory of a club member who died earlier this year, the Best of Class awards were presented. Following these, the Special Award and Best of Show awards were handed out.

We had a terrific show that day. By my count, we had 184 paid attendees, not counting volunteers and vendors. There were 23 vendors on 42 tables. The model contest had 399 entries from 89 entrants. This is believed to be an IPMS Gateway show record.

After packing my models and other things in my car, I helped with other volunteers to clean up the hall and put the tables and chairs back to their normal places. We got this done by around 3:30 p.m., after which I went home.

Around 90 minutes later, I picked up Julie and we went to 2nd Shift Brewing for the St. Louligans watch party for St. Louis CITY SC's match at CF Montreal. We had a good time, especially as CITY won 2-0. Yes, this was a great Saturday for Julie and me.

Two Weekends: Soccer, Sickness, and Cold

One week ago yesterday (6 January), I was at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton for the annual Winter Classic. This is a soccer match pitting the St. Louligans against the American Outlaws St. Louis. I suited up for the St. Louligans and came ready to play. I also came with six cans of food that were donated to the St. Louis Area Foodback, which was receiving donations from both supporter groups.

There was a dusting of snow on the ground to greet us that day. Fortunately, the pitch we were playing on has artificial turf; still, we had to deal with some snow during warmups and early on the match. We came to play.

The match was the usual 45-minute halves with free substitutions. I played two shifts in each half at defender. During the match, I had two touches of the ball. I don't think Tim Parker has anything to fear from me!

"Sports drinks" were provided to the participants from 2nd Shift Brewing and Urban Chestnut Brewing Company. They were much appreciated.

In the final five minute of the match, the rules were tweaked to have several balls on the pitch at the same time. It all added to the silliness of this event.

At full time, the score was (I believe) St. Louligans 4 American Outlaws STL 3. The real winner was the St. Louis Area Foodbank for the food and cash donated to help the food insecure in our area at this time.

I got home to get warmed up and relaxed the rest of the day. That evening, I wasn't feeling so well. Sunday morning, I was down with stomach flu, and it was resting up for the day and night.

The next morning, I was well enough to go into work, though I was a bit slower than usual. My supervisors understood and all worked out well at the branch. However, I was down with diarrhea on Wednesday (10 January). If it's not one thing, it's another. I was able to go to work the next day and got the job done.

I ran a few errands yesterday (13 January) that included finding out I will need to replace the catalytic converter on my Corolla so I can pass the emissions inspection due next month. Ugh.

Today was too cold to be out, with a low of -7 degrees F (-22 C) and a high of only 2 F (-17 C). Wind chills were even lower. This cold spell is here through this Tuesday.

Dates with Julie: Garden Glow and St. Louligans Christmas Party

Wednesday evening (6 December), I arrived at Julie's residence. After exchanging Christmas gifts to place under our respective trees, I drove us to Missouri Botanical Garden to tour the Garden Glow Christmastime light display. After parking on the street and walking to the Garden, we paid our way into the display and walked through it.

It was rather mild for an early December evening and there was a large crowd that evening. Julie and I really enjoyed the various displays of light throughout the garden.

Julie and I were very impressed with this light show. It was accompanied with music in some instances. Animated lights accompanied by music were projected onto one side of Tower Grove, the Henry Shaw house on the Garden's grounds. That was super cool.

I drove Julie home, after making a stop for fuel on the way to her place, then on the way home stopped by Hi-Pointe Drive-In located in Kirkwood for a belated dinner. I had a cheeseburger with fries and cola, all of which were very good. It was my first visit there, and I highly doubt it will be my last.

After work on Friday (8 December), I picked up Julie and drove us to 2nd Shift Brewing in St. Louis for the St. Louligans Christmas Party. Most of our group were present at this party, which featured a catered buffet dinner. Julie and I each bought a beer from the counter to enjoy with our dinner. We heard that the Winter Classic soccer match against the St. Louis chapter of American Outlaws will be played on Saturday, 6 January 2024 at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. Two weeks later, on 20 January, St. Louligans will hold their Annual General Meeting at the Schlafly Tap Room.

I drove Julie back to her place before returning home. Our love for each other remains strong.
