IPMS Gateway Regional 2025

Early yesterday morning (13 September), I drove to Affton Elks Lodge #2635, where IPMS Gateway Chapter was holding its 19th annual Gateway to the West Invitational. This year's event also served as the 2025 IPMS/USA Region 14 Contest.

Reaching the Elks lodge just before 7:00 a.m., I helped with completing the show's set up. The tables were put in place the day before, so it was a matter of helping vendors find their assigned tables and getting our admission, registration, contest, and raffle tables ready. Donuts and coffee were available for volunteers and vendors.

I manned the admission table, near the entrance, where attendees would pay for admission and for contest registration. Each attendees received a wristband (white for volunteers, green for vendors, red for attendees). Randy Kleeschulte joined me at admission to help with collecting money and making change, as well as asking attendees how they found out about the show and where they came from. The survey questions help with promotion efforts.

There was quite a crowd waiting to get in when the show officially opened at 9:00 a.m. Randy and I processed the attendees as efficiently as possible. There were long lines at the contest registration tables, as we had many contest entries.

Once things calmed down, I was able to register my six contest models. These included one I finished the night before, a 1:72 scale He 162A from a Frog kit issued in 1972. This made it eligible for the show's Special Category "The Golden Age: 1975." In celebration of IPMS Gateway's 50th anniversary this year, the category was open to any kit that was available in 1975.

I also entered three models in Military (Bren Gun Carrier, BMW R75 with Sidecar, and 6-Pounder Anti-Tank Gun) and two in Ships (Hatsuharu and HMS Repulse). The three Military entries were also eligible for the Special Category.

Everyone was having a great time, the vendors and raffle were doing good business, and I enjoyed seeing people I have not seen in person for months. At 11:00 a.m., the call was made for contest judges. I was among those who volunteered, and we each got a meal voucher from the Elks Lodge. I had a bowl of chili and a soda for lunch before judging started at noon.

I was put on a team to judge figures and basic kit build (also called out of the box). The three judges--Dave Roeder, Julian Durham, and I--efficiently judged the entries and recorded the top three models in each category we judged. We also made picks for the best in the respective classes.

Julie stopped by as judging was wrapping up. (She was at an event at Eliott Unitarian Universalist Chapel earlier that day.) We chatted briefly, then she left for home.

Judging was done by around 2:30 p.m. and the category awards were placed by the respective entries. I didn't win anything, but that's fine. The competition was strong in the categories I entered.

The Raffle Grand Prizes were drawn and presented, then the major awards were handed out. After Mark Twain Hobby Club presented a special award in memory of a club member who died earlier this year, the Best of Class awards were presented. Following these, the Special Award and Best of Show awards were handed out.

We had a terrific show that day. By my count, we had 184 paid attendees, not counting volunteers and vendors. There were 23 vendors on 42 tables. The model contest had 399 entries from 89 entrants. This is believed to be an IPMS Gateway show record.

After packing my models and other things in my car, I helped with other volunteers to clean up the hall and put the tables and chairs back to their normal places. We got this done by around 3:30 p.m., after which I went home.

Around 90 minutes later, I picked up Julie and we went to 2nd Shift Brewing for the St. Louligans watch party for St. Louis CITY SC's match at CF Montreal. We had a good time, especially as CITY won 2-0. Yes, this was a great Saturday for Julie and me.

Weekend of Class Reunion, Model Contest, and CITY Soccer

Right after a full day of work on Friday (13 September), it was off (after a clothing change on the way) to Andre's Banquet & Catering South in Oakville. My high school class--Mehlville High School Class of 1982--was having a 42.5-year reunion and 60th birthday party. I had to admit it was hard for me to bring myself to come, as I didn't have the greatest of experiences in high school and since. Fortunately, classmates made me feel welcome and I could relax a bit.

I was able to mingle and to meet many of those classmates in attendance along with one of my teachers. There was a buffet dinner with a birthday cake, a slide show of images from Mehlville High during the time we were there, high school yearbooks and other artifacts from those days, a memorial tribute table to classmates and teachers who have died since 1982, and classmate Phil Bender speaking to the crowd. A DJ played music of the time. Overall, it was a nice time that should have gone on an hour or two longer for me.

Among my classmates present that night was my good friend Tim Popp, who I had not seen in person in some time. It was good to catch up with him for a bit.

I came home after the event to get a bit of sleep before being up early the next morning (14 September). It was off to Affton Elks Lodge #2635, where IPMS Gateway Chapter was holding its annual Invitational model contest and swap meet. I was there to help with running the show, particularly in running the admission table. Besides helping take the attendees' money and attaching wristbands, I asked attendees where they found out about the Invitational and where they live. The questions were for survey purposes in planning outreach for future shows.

I entered three models in the contest: an F9F-2 Panther in Aircraft, and a Bren Gun Carrier and 6-pounder anti-tank gun in Armor. I didn't spend much time in the contest and vendor areas, as I was kept busy with attendees. By my count, we had 180 attendees (not counting show volunteers and vendors) who came from as far as West Virginia, Georgia, and Michigan.

I was one of the contest judges, helping out in judging Figures and Out of the Box entries. There were some terrific quality models entered in this show. In fact, 68 attendees entered 317 models in the contest. Virtually everyone left the show happy with how it came out. I stayed to help tear down and get the hall back to where it was before set up the day before. With all the volunteers there, it took just over an hour to do so.

After coming home to drop off my things from the Invitational and making a change of clothes, it was off to Schlafly Tap Room for the St. Louligans pre-match party.  Before St. Louis CITY SC played Minnesota United, it was party time. I got a Kolsch beer from a Schlafly beer tent and a Meatball Here Parmesan with Mozzarella from the New York Tom's Foodtruck.

After the party, I joined the supporters' march into CITYPARK for the match. As the match began, a tifo honoring Hispanic Heritage Month was lowered in front of the Supporter Section.

CITY took the lead early in the match, but that would be the only high point, as Minnesota United scored three unanswered goals to win 3-1. This loss means CITY has very little chance of getting the final playoff spot in the Western Conference of MLS. A disappointing end to the day for me.

IPMS Gateway February 2024 Meeting

Right after work this past Tuesday (20 February), I headed to Affton Elks Lodge #2635 for this month's Gateway Chapter IPMS meeting. I helped set up some items for the meeting, including flyers for upcoming shows, and prepared to assume my Treasurer's duties taking down the meeting minutes.

I also entered two models in this month's Modeler of the Year (MOY) Contest, the first of four this year. Per custom, the February Contest is all Out of the Box (OOB); that is, no modifications to the kits. Kit instructions were required to be included with each entry. The night before, I just finished two Airfix 1:72 scale armor kits that were packaged together: the Bren Gun Carrier and the 6pdr Anti-Tank Gun. Both kits should have been easy to do, but each had fit issues that made them harder than I bargained for. Nevertheless, I had two kits to enter and to earn MOY points.

I had some pretty tough competition in Armor this night and I did not place. Still, it was good to pick up two points per entry: one each for entering and one for the month's Special Category (OOB). There were 21 total contest entries this night from nine members. That sounds like a good start for the year.

This meeting also had the usual announcements of upcoming events and Show & Tell, where members bring in their latest projects (complete and in progress) and other items of interest.

Our featured program was a demo by Jim Triola on detailing and finishing aircraft bombs. He demonstrated his techniques, which include: assembling bomb halves using tube glue; painting bomb tail fins a darker shade than the bomb bodies; adding jewelry wire to the bombs for arming wires; and weathering bombs using oil paint in a dot filter process. It was quite an informative demo from Jim.

The next IPMS/Gateway meeting is Tuesday, 19 March at 7:00 PM at the Affton Elks Lodge.

Julie and I at IPMS/Gateway's 2023 Christmas Party

After getting off work last night (19 December), I drove to Julie's apartment to pick her up and then take her to Affton Elks Lodge #2635. This month's IPMS/Gateway meeting was also the annual Christmas Party.

Julie and I parked at the Elks Lodge and we brought our things into the hall. I brought some tortilla chips and salsa, while she had some sliced bread. We put our items on the buffet table and waited for the meeting to start.

After club president Marion Morris called the meeting to order, we lined up to get dinner. I let Julie go first, then got myself into line. We had quite a few members with several guests--mostly significant others. The club bought meat from Smokee Mo's Arnold BBQ Restaurant and bottles of soda, while club members and guests brought the side dishes and desserts. Nobody came away hungry from this dinner.

After the meal, Morris was presented a certificate from the Civil Air Patrol for recently building a model of a CAP aircraft from World War II for the Jefferson Barracks POW-MIA Museum.

This was followed by elections for club officers. I was unopposed for secretary, so I will be back in that office in 2024. I was also on the ballot for Gateway's Bob Stroup Award for Member of the Year. Three other members were nominated. This award will be presented at next month's meeting.

Morris then ran the annual Recognition Contest, in which members saw images projected against the wall and had to choose from multiple choices on the answer sheet. Julie also played along. This year's contest theme was "Wrecks," with images of wrecked aircraft, ships, armored vehicles, automobiles, and miscellaneous items (mostly science fiction; Julie is quite good with that). I tied two others with the highest score of 20 correct out of 25. I won the tiebreaker and received a Hawker Hurricane kit as the prize.

Speaking of kits, there was finally a raffle of kits the club bought that all members in attendance each had a chance to win. My ticket was one of those picked and I selected the Artemis I space launch vehicle kit, which recently came out.

Julie enjoyed her time there, chatting with a few of the other members in attendance. As the meeting broke up, Julie and I packed up our things and got into my car. Then, I took her to her home, Julie and I hugging and kissing in the car before she left. We will touch base regarding Christmas early next week.

Christmas 2021

Last Tuesday night (21 December), I went to the monthly IPMS/Gateway meeting at the Affton Elks Lodge. We had voting for next year's club officers and for this year's Stroup Award (Member of the Year). I was reelected President by acclamation, as no one else was nominated for the post. I am happy to serve another year as club president. The Stroup Award will be presented at next month's meeting. I am one of the three nominees for that honor.

We also had a buffet dinner, with entrees from Smokee Mo's BBQ and sides provided by club officers. (I brought some cupcakes from Schnucks.) We also had the annual Recognition Contest, in which we had to guess the war movie from the theme music. I got 20 of 23 correct for the best score of the night and earned a $10 gift card from Schaefer's Hobby Shop.

Finally, we had the big kit raffle, in which all members had a chance to win a model kit. With my winning ticket, I selected a kit of the German battleship Tirpitz.

After the rental branch closed early on Christmas Eve (24 December), I drove to Super Smoker's BBQ in Affton to pick up a Christmas Eve dinner my brother Doug ordered for my mom and me. It was delicious, featuring sliced turkey, green beans, and potatoes.

Up the next morning, my mom and I went to the Christmas tree set up in our living room to open some presents. I bought mom a pair of slippers, which she greatly appreciated. I received from mom and my brother Rick several books, including five from Rick's employer, the History Press. I also received a book I ordered from the National Museum of the United States Air Force's gift shop about the XB-35 and YB-49 flying wing bombers, and a large book with maps of key battles over the centuries.

Midday today, I was at Olympia Athletics & Events Centre in St. Charles to referee St. Louis Youth Soccer Association (SLYSA) futsal matches. These three matches were with under 9 boys' teams, and I worked them solo. I had not refereed futsal in about two years and was concerned I would be rusty, but fortunately all the matches went well. I hope to work some more futsal matches in the season, which runs until early February.
