2023 IPMS/USA National Convention (5)

After an overnight drive from San Marcos, I arrived in Austin early on that Sunday (6 August). Finding a parking lot, I pulled in and followed the USA vs Sweden FIFA Women's World Cup Round of 16 match on my phone. Sweden won on penalty kicks, sending the Americans home. I hated to see that, but with the way they played in the tournament, it didn't surprise me.

Just after 7 am, I drove down South Congress Avenue to Jo's Coffee. I had a cold coffee drink and a pastry, which I enjoyed on one of the tables there. It was nice to sit there and have breakfast with the neighborhood stirring. After the meal, I walked by the one side of the building where Jo's motto "i love you so much" was painted on the wall. I snapped a selfie of myself next to that writing and sent it to Julie. She loved that picture.

I then drove down Congress towards the State Capitol.

After driving by the Capitol, I drove to the northwest towards the University of Texas campus. There, I parked and walked to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library and Museum. Some 20 years before, I visited the "LBJ" Library on an earlier visit to Austin. There were a handful of other visitors when I came to visit.

The museum had been extensively renovated since my last visit, with many interactive exhibits. It looked at the life, accomplishments, and legacy of Johnson, the 36th President of the United States. I was born 2.5 months into the Johnson Presidency, so this museum had great resonance to my life.

They also had a gallery on Johnson's wife, Claudia "Lady Bird" Taylor Johnson, and replicas of Lyndon Johnson's Oval Office and Lady Bird's White House office. Also displayed was a limousine used by President Johnson. After touring the museum, I bought a few items in the shop before leaving.

For lunch, I went to Sam's BBQ in Central East Austin. I enjoyed a delicious lunch of brisket and chicken with sides. It's a small place, but well regarded.

I then spent the afternoon driving around Austin, stopping to browse at a few shops. I also topped up the fuel in the rental car, so I would return it at the same full fuel setting as I had picked it up the previous Wednesday.

Late that afternoon, I drove to Austin Bergstrom International Airport, first going to the Enterprise Facility there to return my car. Taking my luggage out, I then walked into the terminal to check in to my Southwest flight to Houston. I arrived at the terminal finding out that this flight was delayed leaving Austin and that I would not make the connecting flight to St. Louis. I enquired at the Southwest counter. They agreed with me and changed me to a later flight out to Dallas.

I passed through the security checkpoint and found my way to the gate for the flight that night to Dallas. After waiting for some 2.5 hours, I boarded the flight and arrived at Love Field. There, I made my way to the gate for the flight to St. Louis. After boarding it and having settled into the seat, the flight attendants said the flight had been cancelled due to crew fatigue issues.

The other passengers and I went back to the terminal and were told the next flight to St. Louis would be about 6 hours from then. This was just past midnight in Dallas. I settled into a seat in the terminal and waited until the flight would board.

After being half asleep for a few hours, I freshened up in the men's room and boarded the flight to St. Louis. This went off without a hitch and I arrived at St. Louis Lambert International Airport in the middle of Monday morning (7 August).

After getting my checked back from baggage claim, I waited for The Parking Spot 3 shuttle bus to arrive. It came and I boarded the bus to take me to my car. After dropping off a few other passengers, the bus arrived at my car. I got out with my baggage, loaded up my car, and drove out of the lot and back home. I had taken this day off from work to unwind, and considering the travel adventure coming home from Austin, it was a wise decision. I came home, unpacked, and relaxed before returning to work the next day.

2023 IPMS/USA National Convention, Part 1

My vacation this year took me to the 2023 National Convention of the International Plastic Modelers' Society/USA (IPMS/USA). This year's convention was held in San Marcos, Texas on 2-5 August.

My trip started early on Wednesday, 2 August by driving to The Parking Spot 3, just west of St. Louis Lambert International Airport. I parked my car at the long-term lot just after 3:00 AM, then took a shuttle bus to the terminal to check in for my flight on Southwest Airlines.

Just after 5:00 AM my Southwest flight departed St. Louis for Dallas Love Field. After landing there and changing planes, I caught another Southwest flight to Austin Bergstrom International Airport. Both flights went smoothly.

After arriving in Austin, I grabbed an iced turbo from Jo's Coffee in the terminal. This drink sure energized me after the early flights. Then, I was off to get my checked bag from baggage claim before walking over to the car rental center.

Arriving at the Enterprise counter, I checked in and had my reservation confirmed. After submitting my driver's license and credit card, I was directed to pick up my rental car (a Toyota Corolla). I checked out my car, put my luggage inside it, then drove off for San Marcos.

I arrived at the convention venue, the Embassy Suites and San Marcos Conference Center, around 10:15 AM. I entered the conference center and found the pre-registration check in line. I checked in and received my packet and the convention t-shirt. In this area, I chatted with a few people I know.

I walked over to the contest registration area to enter my one model in the contest. It was a 1:72 scale Alpha Jet I did a few years back. Having filled in the contest forms before I left home, my time in registration was short and I found the category table in the contest room to place my model.

I walked around the contest area to see the models placed there so far in the show. There were some, but many more would go in there by the time contest registration ended late Friday afternoon. Then, I waited for the three vendor rooms to open. Once open, I began to browse among the approximately 72 vendors present at this convention. One of the vendors, Tamiya, had a limited-edition t-shirt for the first 300 registrants who signed up for their email list. I was among those fortunate people who signed up and got the t-shirt. I also bought some tickets for the convention's raffle of model kits.

After spending the afternoon browsing among the contest entries and the vendors, it was time for me to leave the convention. I stopped by In-N-Out Burger for dinner before driving to the rental room approximately 10 minutes from the Conference Center. I had booked this place on Airbnb.

Arriving at the three-store residence, I entered the security code to unlock the door and made my way to the top floor, where my bedroom and bathroom were located. This accommodation was most suitable for me. After this long day, I went to bed. Day One in San Marcos was over.

2021 IPMS/USA National Convention (6)

After the 2021 IPMS/USA National Convention ended at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, 21 August, I started to head to McCarran International Airport for my flight home. On the way, I stopped by the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada sign. I had passed it on the way into the city the previous Wednesday morning but didn't have time to stop and view the sign up close.  Now, I did.

There was what looked like a wedding party gathered there, but it wasn't too crowded for me to get fairly close to the sign. At least I could say I was there.

After this visit, I drove to the McCarran Rent-A-Car Center to drop off the Toyota Corolla at the Enterprise area. After parking the car and removing my luggage, I dropped the key off and thanked the Enterprise staff on duty for their work. I asked them to pass my greetings to my Enterprise colleagues in the Las Vegas area. They appreciated the gesture and said they would.

Then, I walked to the shuttle bus stop and waited for the bus to take me to the terminal at McCarran International Airport. After a while, the bus arrived to take me and other passengers to the terminal. It was just after midnight when I got to the terminal--over 6 hours before my flight. I found a seat and rested, while music from various artists who have played Las Vegas was heard over the loudspeakers.

Some two hours before my flight, the baggage check in opened at the Southwest counter, so I checked my bag and got into the security checkpoint line. Then, I made my way to the gate for my flight. While waiting, I bought ear buds for my smart phone from one shop and a deck of used Rio playing cards from another.

There were plenty of passengers on this flight, but I had no problem finding a seat and stashing my carry-on items. The flight departed early that morning and headed for a stop-over in Dallas.

The Boeing 737 landed at Dallas Love Field and taxied to the gate. Most of the passengers got off here, but I and others stayed in our seats waiting for the flight to resume to St. Louis.

There were no hitches and the flight landed early that Sunday afternoon (22 August) at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. After getting off the aircraft, I made my way to baggage claim, where I got my checked bag. Then, I walked to the curb to await The Parking Spot shuttle bus. Along with other passengers, I got on the bus and it headed to The Parking Spot 3, where my car was parked.

After letting off the other passengers with their luggage, the shuttle bus driver headed to my Corolla. I got off the bus and the driver got my bags off it to the pavement near my car. I gave him a $5 tip to thank him for his service, which he greatly appreciated. The bus drove off and I loaded up my car and drove off the lot. At the gate, I showed my Q code indicating my payment of the parking fee. This opened the gate and I was on my way home.

After stopping by a nearby Quik Trip for a snack, I drove home. Mom welcomed me back and I carried my luggage into the house. After unpacking, I rested at home--tired but happy for this trip.

The following Saturday (28 August), I drove to Liberty Christian Fellowship in Liberty, Missouri (northeast of Kansas City) for ModelFest. This was a contest and swap meet hosted by IPMS/West Central Missouri. I entered three models in the contest, neither of which placed. However, I enjoyed visiting a Region 14 chapter's event, shopping among the vendors, chatting with fellow modelers, and helping judge Figures and Dioramas. It was a fun time.

Speaking of scale modeling contests, IPMS/Gateway hosts their annual show--the Inaugural Region 14 Contest--this Saturday (11 September) at the Holiday Inn--Route 66 in Sunset Hills, Missouri. Hope to see you there!

2021 IPMS/USA National Convention (1)

Last week, I took some vacation time from my job at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. I was home last Tuesday (17 August), where I spent time packing up and trying to finish a model aircraft--an F4U Corsair--to bring on my trip. However, I ran into difficulties on the Corsair's canopy and decided not to try to finish it at this time. I did have a 1:72 F6F Hellcat I finished some months back that I decided to bring along.

At approximately 1:00 am the next morning (18 August), I woke up, got dressed, and packed my bags into my car. Then, I drove to The Parking Spot 3, a long-term parking facility located west of St. Louis Lambert International Airport. After parking my car in a slot, a shuttle bus came to pick me up with my luggage. It then took me into Terminal 2 at Lambert. I admired a Monocoupe aircraft hanging from the ceiling.

I arrived well in advance of my flight on Southwest Airlines. After checking one of my bags to go into the cargo hold, I went through the Transportation Security Administration security checkpoint. Then, I walked to my gate. With time to spare, I walked to a nearby store and bought a charging cable for my phone, which I plugged into a jack at the gate.

Then, the time came around 5:25 am to start boarding the Boeing 737-800 aircraft for the flight to Las Vegas. After getting aboard, stowing my carry-on luggage (including a plastic box with the model), and getting into my seat, our flight departed Lambert around 6:00 am for the approximately 3.5-hour flight west.

I was able to access the Internet on my phone, which I used to track our flight and to listen to some podcasts. These helped me pass the time. The flight attendants served us refreshments: Mini pretzels and a choice of drinks. I selected Community Coffee.

Around 7:30 am Pacific Time (9:30 am Central Time), our flight landed at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. After getting off the aircraft and getting my bag from the baggage claim carousel, I got on a shuttle bus to the Rental Car Facility just southwest of the airport. I walked in and went to the Enterprise counter. I checked in and paid for my rental, which I had reserved a few weeks ago, and went to the Enterprise section of the garage to pick up my rental. The employee gave me a choice of three cars, and I went with a Toyota Corolla, which I liked most since I have an older Corolla as my personal car.

After driving off the facility in the Corolla, I realized that I had left the box with my contest model at the Enterprise area. From my car, I called Enterprise to report this, and they said they did not know if they saw the box. All they could do was look for it and let me know. I was feeling a bit low at that point, like a chump for leaving the contest entry behind.

Gathering myself, I drove on to my first stop of the day, The Mob Museum in downtown Las Vegas. Located in a former courthouse, the musem traces the history of organized crime in the US and the authorities that fought the mobsters. I had bought my ticket online, so I just showed it to the ticket taker and then began my tour of the three-story facility. Starting at the top floor, I began to look at the exhibits relating to the history of organized crime from its roots in poor immigrant neighborhoods in the late 19th century.

There are many interesting exhibits and audio-visual displays. One was the brick wall in front of which the St. Valentine's Day Massacre of Chicago mobsters occurred in 1929. There are weapons and personal effects of mobsters and crimefighters, along with pictures, posters, and archival film. A courtroom in the building was used for hearings held by Senator Estes Kefauver's committee in 1951, which investigated organized crime and which were nationally televised.

After touring The Mob Museum, I brought a t-shirt and some postcards in the gift shop. The t-shirt featured several fames mobsters of movies and TV--Tony Soprano of "The Sopranos," Tony Montana of 1983's "Scarface," Vito Corleone of "The Godfather," Frank Sheeran from "The Irishman," and Tommy DeVito from "Goodfellas" in a card game. The four postcards were all mobster-related, with one saying KEEP CALM AND TAKE THE CANNOLIS, another saying KEEP CALM AND FUGGEDABOUTIT, a third in eye-chart form saying I SAW NOTHING AT THE MOB MUSEUM LAS VEGAS, and a fourth with a quote by "The Teflon Don" John Gotti: "Don't ever say anything you don't want played back to you someday." It's a terrific museum and I highly recommend it.

I then drove back to the Rental Car Facility to see if someone had picked up the box with my model. Sure enough, the box was where I left it, on a counter in the center of the facility facing the Enterprise counter. Apparently, it had not been touched since I left it there. Amazing! I got the box--with the Hellcat model intact--and drove on to the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. That was the venue of the 2021 International Plastic Modelers' Society/USA (IPMS/USA) National Convention.

I checked in, having registered online some months back, and picked up my packet. This included information on the show and some of its vendors, Las Vegas tourism info, and a decal sheet exclusive to this convention on several aircraft based at nearby Nellis Air Force Base. I also got my t-shirt, which featured the US Air Force Thunderbirds on the back with the Convention emblem.

Then, I found my way to the contest registration, where I checked in (I filled in my contest forms at home the day before). After that, I took my Hellcat into the contest room, found the category it belongs to, and placed my model on the table.

I will pick up the story from late that first day at the IPMS/USA National Convention in my next post.

Later.
