Going Through July: Heat, FIFA World Cup, CITY Returns

Carrying on through this month, I continued to follow the FIFA World Cup, which concluded with Sapin's 1-0 win over Argentina in today's Final. On 6 July, Julie and I went to 2nd Shift Brewing to see USA play Belgium play in the Round of 16. It was quite a letdown, as Belgium won 4-1 to advance to the Quarterfinals and the USA was out. Oh, well.

It has been very hot of late, with temperatures topping 90 degrees F (32.2 degrees C) and heat indices topping 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C). It made for quite a challenge at work, but my boss made sure I hydrated and took frequent breaks.

I made progress on two models on my workbench. This week, I plan to apply decals to the 1:200 Artemis I rocket I look to enter at next month's IPMS/USA National Convention. I also made progress on the 1:350 USS San Francisco model I should have completed in a month from now.

Last Thursday (16 July), St. Louis CITY SC and the rest of Major League Soccer were back. CITY hosted cross-state rivals Sporting Kansas City at Energizer Park. Julie was not able to go, so I sold my extra ticket the day before and came to the stadium straight from work. CITY went out to a 2-0 lead int he first half, before Sporting got one back late in that half and leveled it in the second half. CITY won it off a penalty kick in the 85th minute. A good start to the second half of the season.

Yesterday afternoon (18 July), Julie, her roommate Joan, and I went to B&B Creve Coeur West Olive 10 to watch the new movie directed by Christopehr Nolan, The Odyssey. It was an epic telling of Homer's epic poem, filmed in IMAX. We really enjoyed this film, which was nearly three hours long but did not feel like that. The Odyssey is highly recommended. After the movie, I spent time with Julie and Joan--and their dog, Molly--at their apartment before returning home that night.

This morning, I was a greeter at Eliot Unitarian Universalist Chapel. We had a very nice turnout for the service. After the post-service coffee hour, I headed to St. Louis Union Station to see Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014, a restored huge steam locomotive on a cross-country tour. There was quite a crowd there to see the locomotive, but it was great to see this machine built in 1941 still running.

Recently: FIFA World Cup, New Airbrush, a Family Reunion, and 4 July

I have been following the FIFA World Cup as its progresses from the Group Stage to the Knockout Phase. There's been a few surprises and some great and not so great moments so far. When away from a TV screen, I follow it on the FotMob app on my phone.

Just over a week ago (27 June), Julie picked me up and we went to Mount Vernon, Illinois to attend her father's family reunion. After checking into a hotel, we went to another hotel in town where the relatives had a reception. It was very nice meeting Julie's relatives and reading up on her family history.

The next morning (28 June), Julie and I had breakfast and checked out of the hotel in Mount Vernon. We then traveled to St. Charles Boromeo Catholic Church in DuBois, where Julie's ancestors attended services. It is a quite a beautiful church and one of its members told our group about the place.

Our group then traveled about one mile (0.6 km) east to the cemetery where some of the Rekosh ancestors are buried. After that visit, we traveled to Immaculate Conception Church in Tamaroa for Mass. After that, our group went to Immaculate Conception Cemetery to visit the graves of other ancestors.

Our reunion concluded in Du Quoin, with lunch at Tomahawk Bar & Grill. We had a nice lunch before saying our goodbyes. Julie then took me to where her mother grew up in down and to a pair of cemeteries where her family are buried. After the cemetery visits, Julie drove us home. Quite a wonderful weekend.

Last Monday (29 June), a package from Amazon was at my front door. It was three items I ordered the week before during Prime Days. Specifically, it was Gaahleri GHAD-39 airbrush, a 6-foot (1.8m) braided airbrush hose, and a Timbertech ABPST08 airbrush compressor from Airgoo. The airbrush had two needles (0.35mm and 0.5mm) for options in fine or large area painting. The compressor was a low noise unit with an air tank that can be filled up for constant air pressure. I trialed these items this weekend and they will be most useful for my scale modeling.

This past Wednesday (1 July) was busy even if it was my off day from work. A technician from Overhead Door came over to service the garage door, resetting the remote due to a recent power surge and lubricating the door springs. That afternoon, a plumber contacted via Taskrabbit repaired the master bedroom's toilet, replacing a leaking pump that caused water to keep running even after the toilet stopped flushing. It only took about 10 minutes for the job to get done.

That night, Julie and I went to 2nd Shift Brewing on the Hill for a watch party. We saw USA play Bosnia & Herzegovina in a FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match. Julie and I had dinner--I had the savory ducks and chips from Mess Hall, with 2nd Shift's Simon beer--and watched as USA won 2-0 to advance to the Round of 16 against Belgium tomorrow.

Back at work the next day (2 July), I and my branch mates dealt with high heat and humidity that day and Friday. Temperatures reached up to 95 degrees F (35 degrees C) and heat indices (temperature plus humidity) got up to 110 degrees F (43.3 degrees C). I took plenty of breaks in the air-conditioned office as possible and drank plenty of Gatorade. On the way to work, I refilled a 32-ounce (946.4 ml) jug at Quik Trip with the thirst quencher, and it definitely helped.

I stayed home yesterday (4 July) for Independence Day, the USA's 250th Birthday. It was too hot much of the day to go outside, and it got stormy late in the afternoon. Fortunately, no damage here and the power stayed on.

FIFA World Cup Begins and Circus Flora Continues

Last Thursday (11 June), the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA began. Naturally, I am following the action. Friday after work, I picked up Julie and we went to 2nd Shift Brewing Co. in the Hill neighborhood of St. Louis for a watch party.  A group of fans gathered to watch USA play Paraguay in Los Angeles. Julie and I have gone to 2nd Shift several times to join the St. Louligans in watching St. Louis CITY SC away games.

We ordered dinner and beverages before settling in the watch the game. There was quite a nice crowd this night. We were so happy as the USA jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime. It ended up 4-1 for the USA in their opening group stage match. This was the performance many of their supporters--including Julie and I--were hoping for to start the World Cup. I drove Julie home and we were most happy.

I spent Saturday mostly at home, watching World Cup games on TV and taking care of personal matters. The latter included shopping for groceries.

Yesterday, I attended service with Julie at Eliot UU Chapel. Going home after the post-service coffee time, I relaxed at home before going to Circus Flora to volunteer at the Sunday late afternoon performance. I was working as a ticket scanner, which I also did when I helped at the performance the previous Wednesday night. Using a hand-held scanning device, I would scan the attendees' tickets--either bar codes for printed tickets or QR codes on their mobile phones or email printouts. I stayed about 30 minutes after the show began to accommodate late coming audience members. Then, I went into the Big Top to watch the show. The Wednesday show was near capacity and yesterdays was at capacity. Everyone there enjoyed Flying High, Circus Flora's 2026 show. This runs until this Sunday (21 June). Catch it if you can!

A Weekend with Julie: Dinner, Concert, World Cup Final

Yesterday afternoon (17 December), I drove to Julie's house in Florissant. We then headed to south St. Louis for dinner with Julie's son Dave and Dave's wife Barbe. Originally, we were to have dined at Menya Rui, a Ramen restaurant; however, we arrived to find a long line to get in. We then decided to have dinner at Noodles & Company in Hampton Village Shopping Center. We had a wonderful dinner with conversation.

After dinner, Julie and I said goodbye to Dave and Barbe before we headed to the 560 Music Center in University City. This venue hosted On This Shining Night, a concert of Holiday season music performed by BandTogether, a volunteer music organization in Metro St. Louis of LGBT+ performers. After a pre-show performance by BandTogether's Colorguard in the Pillsbury Theater, we walked to the Auditorium for the concert. Selections ranged from Ukrainian Bell Carol, to Dreidel Dance, to music from the movie Home Alone and the TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas, to Auld Lang Syne.

It was a most enjoyable concert witnessed by a large crowd in the Auditorium. After the show, I briefly said hello and thanks to one of BandTogether's tuba players, Harald Boerstler, who I know from volunteering at Circus Flora. I introduced Julie to Harald before we left the 560 Music Center to head back to Julie's house.

This morning, we had breakfast at home before watching the FIFA World Cup Final on TV. Julie found the match on Peacock, with Spanish language commentary, but we had no problem following the action between Argentina and France.

We witnessed a match for the ages, as Argentina took a 2-0 lead, the France scored twice to level the match and send it to Extra Time. The teams traded goals in Extra Time, which ended drawn at 3 each. Argentina prevailed in the Penalty Shoot Out, 4-2, to win its third World Championship--the first for Lionel Messi, who scored twice in the match and had one of the shootout goals. France's Kylian Mbappe had a hat trick--only the second in a World Cup Final--and had a shootout goal. What a match. Julie was disappointed; she pulled for France. I was happy that Argentina won.

After the match, we printed off some photos that were taken of us two weeks before. These pictures were taken at Zenhorse, an equine therapy facility in Marthasville, Missouri run by my friend Kit Maxwell. She invited Julie and I for photos with Santa Claus (played by Kit's husband) and Mrs. Clause (Kit). Michelle Huelsman of Unbridled Focus did a great job taking the pictures that day. Julie and I each got two pictures printed off for our Christmas albums. (I had brought photo paper and printer ink Julie requested to her house yesterday afternoon.)

Julie and I stopped by a Starbucks for lunch before driving to South County Center. We met with Dave and Barbe, who brought their young daughter to the Santa photo booth. They invited Julie and I to join in the photo, and we did. I then dropped Julie back off at her home, with plans to meet again this coming weekend for Christmas, before going home.

Cold Night and Cold Day for Soccer

Last Wednesday (16 November), I drove to downtown St. Louis. After parking at the Schlafly Tap Room, I walked to Lou Fusz Plaza at CITYPARK, the home ground for St. Louis CITY SC.

I picked up my replica CITY home jersey, which I had preordered two days before, then walked to the street in front of the Schlafly Tap Room. The supporter groups--St. Louligans, St. Louis City Punks, The Thieves, Fleur de Noise, No Nap City Ultras, and STL Santos--were holding a tailgate party. I had a beer from Schlafly (Park Lager) and hung out with them. I also made donations--via the St. Louligans raffle and donation box--to Heat Up St. Louis, which helps low-income residents with their heating bills.

One hour before the 7:00 pm kickoff, we marched from the Schlafly Tap Room into CITYPARK. I carried Ghana's flag into the stadium; other marchers carried other flags and banners. After entering CITYPARK, we made our way to the Supporter Section in the North End and took in the scene.

In CITYPARK's inaugural match, St. Louis CITY 2--the club's developmental team--played German Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen. CITY 2 looks well in playing Bayer 04, but the German team proved too much and they ran out 3-0 winners. Still, being able to see such a match in this new stadium and with a full house mattered more than the scoreline. All this despite the freezing weather.

After the match, I walked back to my car and drove home. The next night, I modeled my replica CITY jersey. I think it looks great.

This afternoon, I was at World Wide Technology Soccer Park to referee matches on the last day of the SLYSA Fall Season. My crew worked three matches on Field 1 under freezing conditions. After running line on an under-15 girls match, I was in the middle for another under-15 girls match. That was a thriller, with the teams trading the lead, and the final goal in a 3-2 result coming 7 minutes before full time. Then, I ran line on an under-13 boys match. All three matches today went well with no controversy.

I caught the first half of the Qatar vs. Ecuador match that opened the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The tournament continues tomorrow with three matches, including USA vs. Wales. I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN! U-S-A!

World Cup Final and SlamFest

Last Sunday morning (15 July), I headed to the Amsterdam Tavern (http://amsterdamtavern.com/) in south St. Louis for a watch party for the FIFA World Cup (https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/) Final in Moscow between France and Croatia. I was joined by many soccer fans in the beer garden at the tavern's rear. Morganford was closed in front of the tavern to allow a temporary enclosure and a large screen TV to be set up for fans.

I had a couple of beers while enjoying the rather thrilling match, which France won by 4 goals to 2. There were quite a few Croatia supporters in the house, and some for France. Everyone was in good spirits.

While at the Amsterdam Tavern, I signed up for SoccerHive (https://soccerhive.com/), a new social network for soccer fans. Check it out and friend me there; I'm rsdstl07.

After the match, I went next door to the Dam (https://thedamstl.com/) for lunch. I had one of their cheeseburgers with a side of Belgian fries and a bottle of root beer. Most satisfying!

It was back to work the next morning. The week went quite well at the rental branch, if a bit slow at times. I did make a couple of trips to the service center near the Airport to get recall issues on a few of our vehicles fixed. Tuesday morning (17 July), I met Annie, our new management trainee at Ellisville. (Jacob recently transferred to our Airport location.)

After work on Tuesday, it was off to Calvary Presbyterian Church (http://calvarypresbyterianchurch.org/) for this month's meeting of IPMS/Gateway (http://www.ipms-gateway.com/) (https://www.facebook.com/IPMSGateway/) (https://plus.google.com/109625362829756697296). This meeting featured our annual SlamFest, in which we had two hours to build and finish a model kit. I was one of eight members who did so; in my case, a 1:72 scale Il-10. The completed models were judges by members who voted on the best entries. The top three vote getting models earned their builders hobby shop gift certificates. I didn't win, but it was fun.

Off to cheer on Saint Louis FC tonight against Orange County. Big match.
